To increase awareness and further educate residents about the benefits of home composting, Ocean County developed a demonstration site at its Northern Recycling Center.  The site is located next to the Ocean County Recycling Education Center. Ocean County residents have expressed their strong interest in backyard composting by supporting the environmental benefits it provides.  The demonstration site is open to the public for their viewing Monday through Saturday from 7:30 am to 3:00 pm.   The site displays in a garden setting various types of home composting units and an information kiosk that describes the composting process as well as providing educational literature for visitors.  For information on the various composting units at the site, just click on the site graphic above.

"How to" compost classes are offered at the Recycling Education Center the spring and fall of each year free of charge to County residents. The next class will be offered Saturday, October 21.  Master Composter volunteers will provide the instruction for this class.  For more information, please click here for our flyer (PDF format) or contact Kathleen Avery, Assistant District Recycling Coordinator at 732-506-5047.  Registration is required for this class.

Master Composter Training Program

The Ocean County Master Composter Training Program is offered once annually, subject to demand, in the fall of each year to train a knowledgeable core of citizens who can provide the residents of Ocean County with information on how they can manage the organic portion of their solid waste.  The premise of this 12-hour program is for the County to train volunteers, who will then agree to provide a total of 24 hours of outreach, education and service to promote the benefits of home composting.   The training is held at the Ocean County Recycling Education Center, located at the County's Northern Recycling Center.  The program is provided free of charge to Ocean County residents and taxpayers.  The non-resident fee is $75.00 per person.  Non-residents must also complete their outreach commitment in Ocean County.  Each applicant must complete an application and be sponsored by a group as this ensures the program with the opportunity to establish an outreach network.  Many types of groups can sponsor an applicant, including garden clubs, municipalities, environmental commissions, recycling committees, retirement communities or service clubs.  The course is limited to 20 persons.  The next training is scheduled for September 25 (7:00 pm - 10:00 pm), September 27 (7:00 pm - 10:00 pm) and September 30, 2006 (9:00 am - 3:00 pm).    For an application (PDF format) and background about the 2006 program click hereThe deadline for applications is August 16, 2006.  For further information, contact Kathleen Avery, Assistant District Recycling Coordinator, at 732-506-5047.
